Our Impact
Together with the Hawaiʻi Island Community Health Center, we supply Naloxone and assist with training Hawaiʻi Police Department Recruits on Opioids and Naloxone.
-
We distribute around 1,300 naloxone kits monthly through “pop-ups” at local grocery stores like KTA and other venues. We also provide educational information to all kit recipients.
-
We have conducted over 450 educational sessions in schools, community gatherings, and events.
-
We hold “train the trainer” sessions, teaching community members how to present to the public on this issue and how to use naloxone.
-
We continue to educate county, state, and federal agencies, particularly the legislature, where Senator Kanuha introduced a resolution last session, SCR 64.
-
We meet regularly with families who have lost a loved one to overdose or been affected by fentanyl or other drug use.
-
We developed a five-year strategic plan in June 2023. We review and refine it continuously to meet our goals and objectives.
-
When other county task forces sought guidance and advice, we helped convene them, assisted and encouraged them, and continued collaborating.
-
We assist community members and leaders from outside our island in supporting their work in addressing the epidemic.
-
We respond to press inquiries.
-
We track the data nationally and locally.
-
We collaborate with first responders, such as the Hawaiʻi Police and Hawaiʻi Fire Departments. We created resource cards for HPD Patrol Officers with phone numbers and information on addictions, substance use, and mental health. We also help supply Naloxone for our HFD paramedics when they need it. HPD has begun releasing monthly stats for our county's fentanyl seizures and arrests—this alone is monumental progress.
-
As a community coalition, we continue to partner with our community to establish naloxone distribution hubs islandwide.
